Clevedon Estate, New Zealand 2013 Vintage: 96 Points “The long-awaited release from a top vintage is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec and cabernet franc grown on clay soils in a beautiful hillside vineyard. This is a ripe and elegant red with an array of subtle fruit flavours interwoven with hint so cedar and spicy oak. Restrained Bordeaux-like red that I find very appealing. Accessible now but with potential to grow even further with additional bottle age.” – Bob Campbell ONZM MW “The 2013 vintage is the best since 2010. Dark and highly fragrant, it is a very elegant, poised youthful wine, with deep, plummy, spicy, nutty flavours, and obvious cellaring potential.” 5 Stars Michael Cooper 96 Points “An enticing bouquet of red wine with a Bordeaux-esque package of aromas from baking spices and dark red berry fruits to a broody muscley core of earthiness and energy. The Cabernet France, though only a 6% contribution to the blend, is powerful and focused with a strong voice of olive and bramble. Flavours on the palate mirror what the nose suggests with baking spice, light and dark berry fruit flavours especially dark plums and blackberry, a whisper of dark chocolate. Youthul still with firm tannins, a slight dusty edge and plenty of acidity. Young, vibrant and balanced though still developing harmonies. Long finish, decant for service though probably best from 2022”. Cameron Douglas MS the wine 72% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 6% Cabernet Franc 14% Alcohol Less than 2700 bottles produced Puriri Hills makes luxurious blended red wines inspired by the grand crus of Pomerol and St Emilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, France. Established in 1996, Puriri Hills is a privately owned vineyard founded by Judy Fowler. We make “estate bottled” wine exclusively from the Clevedon Vineyard and embrace a sustainable and authentic expression of terroir. Climbing from the Clevedon Valley floor carved out by the Wairoa River, up to the ancient river terraces, you find the vineyard. Puriri Hills takes its name from the native Puriri trees growing on the 93 acre property that encircle and protect the 5.5 acres of vines. The outlook of the vineyard is to the north following the course of the river seaward towards Waiheke Island and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. And eastward across a landscape dominated by low valley farmland to the Hunua ranges. To the west the Maraetai hills rise protectively behind the sloping vineyard contours. We are blessed with an outlook we never tire of throughout our seasons of winemaking. https://www.puririhills.com/puriri-hills-estate-2013
