How to Buy

At House of Huia, we value the unique and immersive experience of live auctions and encourage you to join us at our auction house. Here, you can view the items you wish to bid on in person.

Bidding in person

To participate in our live auctions as an in-person bidder:

  1. Visit our auction house: Come to our auction house on the auction day.
  2. View the items: Take time to inspect the items up for auction before the bidding begins.
  3. Register: You must register with our team to obtain a bidding number.
  4. Bidding: Once you have your bidding number, you are ready to participate in the live auction. Simply raise your paddle when you’re ready to bid. A clear intention to bid must always be made.

Online bidding

For those unable to attend our live auctions in person, House of Huia offers the convenience of online bidding. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Create an account on our website
  2. Browse the catalogue: Explore our extensive catalogue of items available for online bidding before the auction begins.
  3. Bidding: Once you’ve found items you’re interested in, place your bid during the real-time auction.

Telephone bidding

If you are unable to be present at our live auction in person or prefer not to bid online, House of Huia offers the option of telephone bidding. A member of our team will call you during the auction and act as your representative during the bidding process. They will relay your bids to the auctioneer in real-time, allowing you to participate in the auction from the convenience of your location. During the auction

The highest bidder will be the purchaser, with the Auctioneer reserving the right to refuse bids from any individual. Bidders must increase their bids by an amount equal to or greater than the value specified by the Auctioneer, and once made, bids cannot be retracted. Items are sold under the condition that the seller retains the right to set a reserve price.

If the highest bid fails to meet the reserve price, the item is considered sold, pending the vendor’s approval. Should the vendor grant approval, the buyer is obligated to complete the purchase.

After buying at the auction

Buyer’s premium

When purchasing from House of Huia, a buyer’s premium of 17% of the hammer price (plus G.S.T.) is applicable.

Payment

Payment must be made within seven days of the auction’s conclusion. We accept various payment methods, including online banking, EFTPOS, Paypal, and Cash.

Collection of items

Once payment is finalized, purchased items can be collected during and after the auction. Goods must be picked up from our Middleton Office address within 5 business days of the auction.

Shipping

We offer the option to ship items at the buyer’s expense. For more information, see Shipping Terms.
