Service medal of the Order of St. John, and Serving Brother badge of the Order of St. John awarded to Ernest Victor Hughes. He received the medal in 1947, 1st bar in 1953 and 2nd bar in 1961, for his service with the North Otago Sub-District, SJAB. He was appointed a Serving Brother of the Order of St. John in 1950. Ernest Hughes was born in Invercargill on 19th February 1903, and resided in Balclutha for the majoirty of his life, working as a boot repairer. He died on 9th January 1981 at Balclutha.
