The British War Medal and Victory Medal pair awarded to 63249 John Albert White, who served on the Western Front with 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment during 1918. John Albert White was born 2nd July 1878 at Dunedin, New Zealand. Son of Thomas Henry and Catherine White. John White appears to have worked as a tailor in Dunedin in the years leading up to the First World War, although at the time of his enlistment in 1917 he was working as a labourer at Waimate. White enlisted in July 1917 and embarked with the 31st Reinforcements. He was posted to 2nd NZ Entrenching Battalion in France in late March 1918 before transferring to 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment in April 1918. He served in the field for the duration of the war on the Western Front, returning to New Zealand in July 1919. After the war White worked as a tram conductor in Dunedin. He died 29th October 1958 in Dunedin and is buried in Andersons Bay Cemetery.
