The HMS New Zealand was funded as a gift to the United Kingdom by the government of New Zealand. The battlecruiser was launched in 1911. It came on tour here in 1913 for which these silver commemorative medals where produced. It was a highly successful tour that was very well received with people extremely excited at seeing this magnificent and tangible piece of empire.
