Japanese - WW2 "Yosegaki Hinomaru" (Goodluck Flag)

Realised: $650 plus premium

Lot Details

An exceptional and well signed yosegaki hinomaru (Japanese Goodluck flag). Constructed in very high quality silk, this flag is a great example of Japanese culture and ww2 itself. Yosegaki hinomaru or sometimes referred to as, "goodluck flags", "meatball flags", or, "surrender flags" were given to soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army by their family. Often signed with names and well-wishers from friends, family and neighbors, the flags were proudly carried into battle. As allied forces closed in on Japanese positions, many of these yosegaki hinomaru were taken as war spoils. In recent years there have been efforts to see some flags returned to family members of the fallen soldiers in an effort to bring closure. Owing to the flags importance, we would strongly encourage the successful purchaser to have it framed with archival materials and/or store it in a stable environment.
