Reginald John Gander had served in the Royal Navy since 1908. On 6th July 1917 he was transferred to HMS Vanguard, a St Vincent-class dreadnought battleship based at Scapa Flow. Three days after Gander joined the ship, HMS Vanguard suffered a catastrophic accident when the central magazine exploded for reasons which remain unclear to this day. The ship sank immediately with the loss of 843 of the 845 men aboard, including Reginald Gander.
