Lot Details

Very early 1827 pattern Royal Naval officer’s sword with fine etched engraving adorning the blade. Marked for Dudley of Portsmouth, this sword is known as the “pipe-back” variant due to the rounded back of the ricasso; this is one of the earliest variants of the Naval officer’s swords. Blade showing signs of rust and in need of surface cleaning, some engraving obscured. Shagreen grip in pristine condition bound with coper wire terminating with a lion-head pommel. Matching scabbard also marked for Dudley of Portsmouth showing advanced signs of distress with two areas in need of conservation.
