The Indian Mutiny issued to 3546 Pte John Wood, 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot. John Wood, born at Fyfield, Chipping Ongar, England around 1828. Enlisted in 70 Regiment on 24 th April 1855 at Chatham, giving his trade as labourer. He served overseas for nearly all of his military service, seeing active service during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, receiving the medal with no clasp. He sailed on the Louisa with his regiment to New Zealand, arriving in May 1861, where he served until taking his discharge at Napier in December 1865. He received an undated NZ War Medal. Wood married and had a family of two daughters and in his later years he resided at the Ranfurly Home in Auckland. He died at Auckland Hospital on 20th January 1911. The Mutiny Medal is impressed, and was issued to Wood in New Zealand on 21/8/1893.
