New Zealand War Medal to David Nichols, Private, Taranaki Military Settlers David Nichols, born Coulsdon, Surrey, England around 1822. Married 1841, and had a son, William, before his wife died in 1844. Nichols emigrated to New Zealand sometime between then and his marriage to Jemima Poe at New Plymouth in 1852. On his medal application, Nichols claimed service with the Taranaki Cavalry Volunteers and the Taranaki Military Settlers, coming under fire at The Battle of Mahoetahi on 6th November 1860. His medal claim was approved in 1882 and the medal was issued in October of that year. David Nichols died at New Plymouth on 11th May 1897 and is buried in Te Henui Cemetery.
