NZEF Trio and WW2 Pair to 10/2218 FJG McDougall

Estimate: $500 - $700

Lot Details

The 1914/15 Star trio and WW2 pair issued to 10/2218 Frank James Gordon MacDougall, who served in Egypt in 1915 and briefly with 1st Canterbury Regiment in New Zealand during the Second World War. When Frank enlisted for service with the NZEF at Wairoa in 1915, he claimed to have been born in 1894 at Dunedin, however is war service was limited due to being "under age and not strong enough for war service" in 1915. A subsequent medical report declared he had enlisted when just 16 years of age. Frank had embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, but soon after arriving in Egypt, suffered an abdominal strain which resulted in his evacaution back to New Zealand and discharge for the reasons given above. In 1919 he attested for service with the NZ Garrison Artillery, giving his birth date as 19th July 1899. This is likely to be correct. During WW2 Frank served for a brief period in September/October 1940 as a cook with the 1st Canterbury Regiment before being discharged. This service was assessed as 'non-mobilised'. Frank subsequently claimed service with the RNZAF at Wigram until 1944, but this has not been confirmed although his medal entitlement indicates he was mobilised to qualify for the WW2 pair so is likely to be correct. He died at Invercargill on 2nd May 1957.
