The British War Medal and Victory Medal pair awarded to Joseph Cannon, who served during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, where he was wounded. Joseph Cannon was born 7th May 1890 at Milton, New Zealand. Son of Patrick and Catherine Cannon. At the time of the First World War Joseph was living in Cheviot, North Canterbury, wherer he worked as a hairdresser. He enlisted for service with the NZEF in October 1915, and embarked for Suez with 4th Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade in January 1916. He arrived in Egypt in March 1916, and the following transferred to France. Joseph served on the Western Front with C Company, 4th NZRB and during the Battle of Morval, part of the wider Somme campaign, he was wounded in the fingers of his left hand. He was subsequently evacuated to the UK and, in February 1917, embarked for return to New Zealand. Joseph was discharged from the NZEF in October 1917. Joseph Cannon died at Christchurch on 22nd November 1967.
