Frederick James Cunningham served on the Western Front with 1st Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment from May 1917. He was wounded during the Battle of Passchendaele on 12 October 1917, and admitted to hospital at Etaples. On his recovery he was sent back to unit, and in January 1918 was promoted to lance-corporal. Cunningham was wounded for a second time on 27th March 1918, and died from his wounds at Camieres four days later. He was buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
