Chilean heavy Cavalry Sabre, model 1890

Realised: $300 plus premium

Lot Details

This heavy cavalry sabre was manufactured in France specifically for export. Manufactured by the famed French state owned weapon manufacturer, D'armes de Chatellerault and impressed with "Manufacture d'armes de Chatellerault" on the ricasso followed by “JH” (Jacob Holtzer, steel supplier). Whilst some debate surrounds the shield on one face of the ricasso, it’s likely a depiction of the Chilian coat of arms with single star to show it had passed inspection in Chilie. Handgrip is curved and made of black hard rubber with single finger-groove to the distal which was cutting edge technology for its time. The guard is impressed “36”, “274-7-C-P-16” and is formed from steel rather than brass. Scabbard appears unmarked, minor pitting to blade.
