The NZEF pair issued to 22289 Private James Scully, who was twice wounded whilst serving on the Western Front. James Scully was born 17th September 1889 at Invercargill, New Zealand. Son of Michael and Bridget Scully (née Healey). At the time of his enlistment in the NZEF in May 1916 he was working as a Packer for Mr Hazlett in Invercagill. He embarked with the 16th Reinforcements, and joined 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment in the field in December 1916. He served throughout 1917, until being wounded in the neck during the Battle of Broodseinde on 4th October 1917. He was evacuated to the UK, and on recovering, returned to his unit in April 1918. He was wounded for a second time on 30th August 1918 and evacuated to the UK via Rouen. The war ended whilst he was still in recovery, and he returned to New Zealand for discharge in early 1919. He married in 1922 and died at Invercargill on 17th February 1969. James was one of five brothers who served in the NZEF during the First World War. One of James brothers received the DCM and was later killed at Le Quesnoy.
