The British War Medal / Victory Medal pair issued to 39113 William Small, who was wounded on the Western Front in late 1917. William Small was born 8th September 1896 to John Small and an unknown mother. At the time of his enlistment in the NZEF in October 1916, William as working as a labourer at Ladbrooks, South Canterbury. He embarked with the 22nd Reinforcements, and joined C Company, NZ Machine GUn Battalion in the field in September 1917. He was wounded by a shell on 28th December 1917 and evacuated to the UK, where he remained until embarking for New Zealand in July 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit due to his wounds, and was issued Silver War Badge NZ11185.
