The British War Medal and Victory Medal pair issued to 25/975 Ernest Farrell, who was wounded during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Ernest Farrell was born 24th February 1876 at Thames, New Zealand. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Farrell (née Lyons). He was working as an ironmonger in Auckland for many years prior to his enlistment in the NZEF. He served in 1916 with C Company, 3rd Battalon NZRB until being wounded on 25th September 1916. He was evacuated to the UK, and on his return to France in 1917, was transferred to 1st Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to sergeant in June 1917, but by November 1917 the rigours of war had caught up with Ernest, and he was evacuated to the UK suffering from rheumatism. He remained in the UK until the end of the war, returning to New Zealand in May 1919.
